The problem is not effort. The problem is what that effort is built on, and where it gets pointed. Belfast is a relatively compact employment market, and many employers here receive far more applications than the number of roles would suggest. An untailored CV is easy to spot in that volume, and it gets filtered out quickly, often by an applicant tracking system before a person ever reads it.

One of the things mid-career professionals find hardest is talking about themselves without sounding like they are pitching. The key is to talk about contribution rather than credentials. Instead of leading with titles and tenure, try describing what you make possible. What do you help organisations do better? What do colleagues or clients tend to rely on you for? Where does your involvement change the outcome?
